Fishing Reels

With the advanced technology of today fishing reels, like alot of things, have gotten somewhat complicated.  You have fly fishing reels, spin-casting fishing reels, open faced fishing reels, and closed face fishing reels.  You can pick a reel that is designed specifically for the type of fish you are looking to catch.  For example there are carp fishing reels, walleye fishing reel, crappie fishing reels etc.

Some of the more general categories for fishing reels can be simplified with the following.
1) Fly fisihng reels
2) Spinning fishing reels
3) Casting fishing reels
4) Trolling fishing reels

Fly Fishing Reels

Fly fishing reels are used for exactly that… fly fishing.  They are designed to be used with a fly fishing rod and are not meant to be used to cast from directly.  The fly fishing rod will be the key for the cast so be sure and research the fly fishing rod as well.  Typically fly fishing reels come in two different subcategories, single action and automatic.  This refers to how the fly fishing reel, actually “reels-in” the line.  In the single action (or multiplier) you will manually reel the line back into the spool.  In the automatic fly fishing reel it is typically spring loaded and will reel your line back into the spool with the pull of a level or push of a button.

Spinning Fishing Reels

These types of fishing reels can be broken down into two subcategories as well; the open face and the closed face.  Spinning reels are the most popular fishing reel type for the average angler.  If you are think of a stereotypical fishing reel you most likely are thinking about a spinning fishing reel.  The largest advantage of spinning fishing reels is their price.  Typically spinning fishing reels are much less expensive than the other types.. especially the trolling fishing reels.

Casting Fishing Reels

A casting fishing reel is what I use most when I am out looking to catch some fish.  I typically fish from the shore and this type of reel is very smooth and efficient allowing for good distance with each cast.  You will pay a little extra for a cast fishing reel over a spinning fishing reel.  But, if you are fishing from the bank, its worth a little extra cash.

Trolling Fishing Reels

Trolling fishing reels are the most expensive of the bunch.  These are typically used for saltwater fishing large fish.  If you have ever been on a saltwater fishing trip you know these well.  When you are in the ocean on a fishing boat you will typically troll.  So a trolling fishing reel is not meant to be cast.  Its strong point is leverage and power when reeling in the line.  This is very helpful when you hook into a large sailfish that is shooting to the moon or a 200 lbs. black tip shark that is looking to get to the deepest point possible.
