Fly-Fishing 101 – Where to Find Fish

Fish constantly move in ponds and in lakes. In order to find them, you must cover a lot of water. In other words, you must keep moving. Eventually, you will find them. Sounds good, but the truth is fish generally feed in patterns. Once you learn the patterns of fish, you will no longer need or want expensive fish finders and expensive lures. All you will need is your pole and a fly.

It is All About Patterns

Discovering those patterns and learning the best way to find them requires research, trial and error. Visit your public library, search the Internet and, of course, ask the people at your local tackle store.

The key to learning the patterns of fish is to take one species at a time: bass, perch, carp and you get the idea. The best fish and easiest fish to learn to catch are bass. Bass will try to eat anything that moves when they are feeding or spawning.

Fly-Fishing in Regular Fishing Waters

I love to go fly-fishing where other people are fishing with the traditional rod and reels. The truth be known, after a while, you will learn how to catch fish when the other anglers come up empty handed (skunked).

If you out fish them, they won’t laugh at you because they think you are going about it the hard way. If you do, they will be impressed. That won’t hurt your confidence.

Fly-fishing is easier because you will be learning about the habitat and feeding patterns of the species you are going after. The regular anglers will be learning how to use that complex and expensive equipment they bought, and not enjoying nature and the environment that surrounds them.

The Art of Catching Fish

Fly-fishing is as much an art as a sport. The more you get into fly-fishing, the more you will learn fish patterns and the art of choosing the fly that will attract them. You will learn how to make flies out of just ordinary objects just for the fun of making your own fly. I catch a lot of bass and perch using a fly I make from a matchstick.

The true fly fisherman learns to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. He can have fun trying his own imagination to create a fly that tricked Mother Nature and produced a fish as a reward. In fly-fishing, it is all about the art of fishing and flies, not about expensive toys.
