Nantahala River Fly Fishing For Trout During the Winter and Spring Months

Nantahala river fly fishing for trout is a treat for all anglers. Fly fishing during the winter and spring months can bring some challenges but the river is stocked with rainbow, brook and brown trout so you should be able to catch at least a few fish on a dry fly, wet fly or nymph. Fishing in this area is not only a treat because you have the ability to catch many big fish but also because the area is so beautiful.

Taking a drive through the Nantahala River Gorge will leave you with some views you will never forget. Even though the leaves have fallen off the trees it does not mean there are not many breathtaking views of the river and mountains. The “upper” Nantahala River is catch and release during the winter and spring months so there should be a high population of trout for you to catch. During the colder times of the year it is a bit of a challenge to catch trout on a dry fly but this gives you an opportunity to master your nymph fishing skills.

By using some of the basic nymph patterns including the Hair’s Ear and Pheasant Tail you should have no trouble at least getting some bites. Having the ability to recognize the bites and set the hook is a whole different story. The trout in the Upper Nantahala River are not very picky so presenting the nymph to them should not be a problem. Make sure to bring our strike indicator as they often spit the nymph out before you released you have them hooked.
