Types of Fly Fishing Reels

Fly reels play a very important role in fly fishing. They help you manage and control your fly fishing line. You use them to manage the line which is in action as well as that which is awaiting its turn. A poor reel line makes you exert more pressure when releasing and taking in the line with every cast you make. You must choose an appropriate fly fishing reel that complements the weight of the rod and line. There are three basic types of fishing reels: automatic, single-action and multiplier reels.

Single action reels are the most common type of reels and the most basic too. It is composed in a simple way. The spool is visible from the outside and can be taken off and returned with ease. Push the release lever and you have the spool free. It is easy to operate too. A single action is all that’s needed to turn the handle of the reel and get it spooling. When turning the handle, your other hand should be on the rod and line. This is because a portion of the line will be reeled out when you cast. This type of reel is used to store the extra fly line.

A multiplier reel turns the spools several times when you turn the handle. It is handy when speed is of essence, such as when catching large fish. It is ideal for catching bigger fish.

An automatic reel has no handle. Instead, it uses a device with strings that are controlled using a lever located at the front of the reel. It is ideal in situations where fast retrieval is required. The only down side with the automatic fly reel is that it is heavy in weight, which may be why most anglers don’t use it as often.
